Most personal finance apps were built for someone else — a single currency, a single language, a single bank that talks to an open API. The Arab world doesn't look like that. We pay in lira, save in dollars, send in dirhams, and split bills in a language that switches mid-sentence. Masarif starts from that reality.

THE INFRASTRUCTURE FINALLY CAUGHT UP.
For the first time, a personal finance app can actually understand a Lebanese voice note that mixes Arabic and English, read a receipt in Arabic, hold a real conversation about your goals, and run on infrastructure cheap enough to give away during early access. That was not true two years ago.
لأول مرة، فينا نبني تطبيق مالي بيفهم ملاحظة صوتية بالعربي والإنكليزي مخلوطين، بيقرأ فاتورة عربية، وبيحكي معك عن أهدافك من غير ما يكون غالي. هيدا الشي ما كان ممكن من سنتين.

01 · The problem
Every month I'd look at my expenses, then look at my wife, and we'd ask each other the same question: where did the money go? Three currencies, two phones, half a dozen receipts in the kitchen drawer, and no real answer.
كل شهر، كنت اتطلّع عَ مصاريفي، واتطلّع عَ مرتي، ومنسأل بعض نفس السؤال: لوين راحت الفلوس؟ ثلاث عملات، تلفونين، فواتير بدرج المطبخ، وما في جواب فعلي.
02 · I tried four apps
I downloaded four. Each one wanted me to connect a bank that doesn't talk to apps in our region, or pick a single currency, or fill out a 12-step setup before I could even log a coffee. After two weeks I quit, and the kitchen drawer kept filling.
نزّلت أربع تطبيقات. كل وحدة بدّها بنك ما بيكلّم تطبيقات بمنطقتنا، أو عملة وحدة، أو 12 خطوة إعداد قبل ما اقدر اسجّل قهوة. بعد أسبوعين بطّلت، وضلّ الدرج عم يمتلي.
03 · The bot idea
Then it hit me. I was already on Telegram all day. What if I could just message my finance app the way I message a friend? No forms. No dropdowns. No setup. Just ‘paid 30 for fuel’ — in Arabic, English, voice, whatever — and it would understand. That's when Masarif became an AI bot instead of an app.
بعدين فهمت. أنا أصلاً عَ تيليجرام طول النهار. شو لو فيي ابعت لتطبيق المصاري متل ما ببعت لصاحب؟ بلا استمارات. بلا قوائم. بلا إعداد. بس «دفعت 30 بنزين» — بالعربي، بالإنكليزي، بالصوت، شو ما كان — وهو يفهم. هون صار مَصاريف بوت ذكي مش تطبيق.
04 · Photos for the kitchen drawer
Then we taught it to read receipts. Snap a photo at the register — even a fully Arabic one — and Masarif pulls the total, the date, the merchant, the line items. The kitchen drawer is empty now.
بعدين علّمناه يقرا الفواتير. صوّر الفاتورة عَ الكاشير — حتى لو كلّها عربي — ومَصاريف بيطلّع المجموع والتاريخ والمحلّ والأغراض. الدرج صار فاضي.
05 · Voice notes for life on the road
And then we taught it voice. Driving home, hands on the wheel, you just press record and tell it. By the time you park, the expense is logged. That's when it stopped feeling like an app and started feeling like a mentor who actually fits the way we live.
وبعدين علّمناه الصوت. وأنت سايق، إيدك عَ المقود، بس بتدوس تسجيل وبتحكي. لمّا تركن، تكون العملية مسجّلة. هون بطّل يحسّ متل تطبيق وصار يحسّ متل مستشار بيناسب طريقتنا بالعيش.
Every Arab — every young person, every family, every freelancer, every parent — deserves a finance tool that was actually built for them. Not translated. Not adapted. Built. That's Masarif. That's why we're here.
